Alternatives to Traditional Picture Frames

Photographs and pictures are fantastic ways of showing off your passions and the things you love in and around the home. However, it doesn’t matter how different or versatile your photos are, if they are all being mounted and hung in the same type of traditional picture frame.
There are many options available for printing and hanging photographs that don’t rely on frames to do the job. Whether you want a way to make your picture stand out, or you just want to mix things up on a gallery wall, consider these alternatives to traditional picture frames for your next project.
Stretched Canvas
Rather than framing a flat photograph and keeping it behind glass, consider having your images printed on stretched canvas instead. A canvas image has a depth and texture that is lacking in an ordinary photograph, which can help make your photo more appealing to view.
At the same time, a stretched canvas will stand out off the wall from ¾ of an inch to 2-inches – something that a framed photo just won’t do. It’s this visual and physical depth that sets a canvas apart and calls great attention to the image contained there.
Metal Print
If you want your image or design to truly stand out from the crowd, consider having it printed on metal instead. Metal prints have a very different look and feel to them than paper or canvas, which makes them unusual and interesting to view.
Printed with a luster or matte finish, a metal print can be hung so it is set off of the wall or mounted so it can sit on the table much like a framed photo can. Either way, no frame is required to detract from the beauty of the image when it’s printed on a metal sheet.
Unstretched Canvas
Want to get truly creative with your images? Have one or more printed on unstretched canvas. Loose canvas can be hung in a variety of ways from clips to piano wire, giving you a variety of options in how you will display the finished results. In this case, a frame would only get in the way, weighing down the image and anchoring it in a way that a stretched canvas doesn’t need to deal with.
Mix Up Your Displays
While framed photographs and traditional picture frames will always have their place, they are far from the only way that you can display your images and artwork. If you’re looking for ways to complete your interior design or décor that go beyond tradition, consider mixing it up with any or all of these alternatives. Put them together on a gallery wall, or just invest in one focal point design. Either way, your images are sure to stand out from the crowd.
