Maps on Custom Wallpaper
by Cody Johnson | Oct 2, 2013 | Art & Decor
I love maps. For as long as I can remember, I’ve always loved maps. From the time I learned to read, I was the navigator on family road trips. It helps that I’ve got a pretty good sense of direction too. Now, I’m obsessed with the fact that I can pull up a map instantly on my phone, of where I am or anywhere in the world. I plan my trips on Google maps and create my own icons and routes. Obsessive? Maybe.
Part of my love is from my desire for travel and exploration, but I also feel like this map-fetish comes from the visual artist in me. Have you ever seen anything more beautiful than a map? Whether a hand-drawn historic world map, or a colorful modern public transit route, they all grab your attention and make you want to look further.
It’s great to indulge in a collection like this because it supplies endless décor and art ideas. Take a look at my office for example:

This is a map of the world from 1660. It’s fascinating to look at the names of places, what has been charted and what hasn’t, but also there is so much intricate detail and art around the map itself.
I’ve made canvas prints of historic city maps for friends and family as gifts. It’s great for people who have moved away so they can keep a beautiful art piece from “home” to remember it.
Satellite maps also make really neat prints on aluminum. The colors really pop and if you go for a more abstract view it can look like very modern/ urban art. As you can see we covered an entire wall in my old office with the map (which I miss dearly). We printed the map on our custom wallpaper. If you have questions about how to print a map or any image you love onto our custom wallpaper don't hesitate to give us a shout.
I recently uncovered a box of souvenirs and trinkets from travels, including MANY maps. I spent half a year in Europe (pre-smart phones and GPS) and kept city maps from most of the places I went. They are all different shapes, styles and sizes and if I can find the right frames for them I think it will make a really unique and eclectic display.
